Phone Number Area Code Finder

Paste any US phone number — in any format, with or without the country code — and we'll pull out the area code and tell you where the number originates.

Paste or type a phone number above.

Note: the area code shows where a number was first issued, not where the phone is now. People keep their numbers when they move, and scammers can spoof any code. See spam & scam-risk codes.

How the phone number finder works

Paste a number in any format — (212) 555-0142, 212-555-0142, +1 212 555 0142, or just the digits. The tool strips out spaces, dashes, parentheses, and a leading country code, then reads the first three digits as the area code and looks them up in our directory. It instantly returns the origin city, state, and time zone.

What “origin” really means

An area code tells you where a number was first issued — not where the phone or its owner is today. Thanks to number portability, someone can move across the country and keep their original mobile number and area code. So treat the result as the number's home region, not a live location.

Why caller ID can lie

Scammers routinely spoof caller ID to display a fake number, often one matching your own area code and prefix (“neighbor spoofing”). A familiar-looking area code is never proof a call is genuine. Our spam & scam-risk codes guide explains how spoofing works and how to respond. To explore codes directly, use the area code lookup or browse all area codes.
