Area Codes by Time Zone
Know when it's safe to call. Group every US area code by its time zone — Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, and the Alaska, Hawaii–Aleutian, and Atlantic zones for the rest of the numbering plan.
Why area codes and time zones don't line up neatly
The continental United States spans four main time zones — Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific — with Alaska and Hawaii–Aleutian time for the two non-contiguous states and Atlantic time for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Area codes were drawn around population and switching needs, not time-zone lines, so a single code usually sits cleanly in one zone, but a handful of states straddle a boundary.
Where a state splits across two zones — like the Florida Panhandle, western Texas, or eastern Tennessee — we note the exception on that state page and assign each code to the zone its main city observes. Remember, too, that a mobile number keeps its original area code when the owner moves, so the code shows a number's home zone, not necessarily where the phone is right now.
