Newest & Upcoming Area Codes

New area codes activate somewhere in the country almost every year. These are the latest overlays coming online and what they cover.

Last updated October 1, 2026

TL;DR

New US area codes are added as overlays when a region nears number exhaustion. The newest are 465 (New York City, June 2026), 483 (Alabama, February 2026) and 471 (Mississippi, January 2026). Next up: 565 for Savannah, Georgia (planned for December 2027) and 761 for Louisville, Kentucky (date not yet set). Existing numbers don't change; new codes apply to new lines.

Upcoming and recently activated codes

The codes below are every US area code activated since 2023, plus the planned codes still to come, taken from the official NANPA area code report. All are overlays, so no existing customer changes a number.

How a new code goes live

When projections show a region running out of prefixes, the numbering administrator and the state regulator approve relief, set an activation date, and publicize it. There's usually a permissive-dialing window during which both old and new dialing work, followed by mandatory 10-digit dialing once the overlay is active. Because the new code overlays the existing one, the rollout is invisible to current customers — until they order a new line and receive the new code.

Why so many new codes lately

Mobile phones, data devices, and number portability burn through numbering capacity quickly, especially in fast-growing Sun Belt metros. Texas, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas add codes most often. Browse the state pages to see which codes are in service versus planned.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the newest area code?

The newest US area code is 465, which went into service on June 18, 2026 as an overlay for New York City's outer boroughs (347/718/917/929). Before that came 483 in Alabama (February 2026) and 471 in Mississippi (January 2026). Each is an overlay on an existing code.

Will a new area code change my number?

No. New codes are overlays, so your existing number stays exactly the same. Only newly issued lines may receive the new code.

How do I find out if my area is getting a new code?

Check your state's page on this site, or watch for notices from your phone carrier and state public utility commission ahead of an activation date.
